Origin & Outcome
Bacteria builds up on all our teeth, the cause of deposits called plaque, or tartar. Apart from affecting the surface of your teeth, this can bring periodontitis, a disease of the tissues supporting our teeth.
Our immune systems can react unhelpfully to periodontal disease, enhancing, rather than lessening symptoms. Early signs could be inflamed, or bleeding gums, although periodontal issues may be hard to see, except during a dental examination.
In the later stages, you are likely to notice symptoms. Receding gums are a common sign but related bone degeneration and reduction may still not be apparent to the naked eye.
Loose, or lost teeth can follow, along with wider general health issues. Regular professional inspection, dental cleaning and good hygiene will help with prevention. A sound move, treatment is available but there is not always a simple solution.
